Bulletin Board Burnout: Why Teachers Feel the Pressure and How to Take It Back
Sep 19, 2025When I first started teaching, bulletin boards were something I enjoyed but they were also my nemesis. I’d spend evenings and weekends scrolling Pinterest for ideas, cutting letters, and making last-minute trips to the store for borders or colored paper. Each holiday, season, or cultural event felt like another stressor.
I loved creating beautiful boards for my students, but the prep was endless. I’d go down a bulletin board rabbit hole online and then realize I still had lesson plans to finish. I wanted my students to feel seen and inspired, but I also wanted my time back for my family, for planning, for rest.
That frustration led to me looking for a new approach. Over time, I discovered systems and shortcuts that let me still create meaningful displays without sacrificing my free time or costing a fortune. In this post, I’m sharing the practical tips and mindset shifts that transformed bulletin boards from a stress point into something I now run on autopilot.
Rethink the Role of the Bulletin Board
For years I treated bulletin boards as purely decorative a chance to make the classroom look cheerful or show off stellar student work in the hallway. But research and my own experience have shown me they’re far more powerful than that. When students walk into a room and see themselves, their work, and their cultures reflected on the walls, it signals that they belong.
That’s why I’ve made it a priority to highlight cultural months and holidays on our hallway and classroom bulletin boards. Whether it’s Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, or celebrations like Lunar New Year or Diwali, intentionally featuring these events sends a powerful message: you matter here. When students see their traditions, heroes, and stories displayed in a shared space, not just briefly mentioned in a lesson, it validates their identities and sparks conversations among peers. These boards become more than décor; they become windows into our diverse world and mirrors for students’ own lives.
By rotating displays tied to cultural months and community events, I’ve seen students stop, read, ask questions, and proudly point out connections to their families. It’s a simple but impactful way to make every child feel seen, valued, and included.
Work Smarter, Not Harder With Materials
The supplies you use have a huge impact on your time. Here’s what’s made the biggest difference for me:
- Reusable Letters and Borders – Print letters on cardstock, laminate them, and store by color or theme. Neutral borders stay up all year; just add one accent border for seasonal flair.
- Large Art Across Multiple Pages – Design oversized art to print over two or three sheets of standard 8.5x11 paper and tape it together. This gives you “poster size” graphics without needing a special printer.
- Neutral Backgrounds, Bright Accents – Keep a cream or blue background paper up all year and rotate just the headline and border colors. It takes 10 minutes to refresh a board.
- Digital Resources Save Ink and Time – Use printable borders and letters so you can reprint as needed instead of running to the store every time you’re short on materials.
In recent years, more and more teachers have started leaning on coordinated bulletin board kits and digital libraries to take the stress out of classroom décor. Rather than reinventing a new display from scratch each month, these services provide ready-to-print art, headers, and student work pages designed to be culturally responsive and seasonally relevant.
This trend is exactly why I built Bulletin Board Club to help teachers get their next board done before they even have to think about it. By using a membership like this, teachers can reclaim time for instruction, relationships, and their own well-being while still giving students an inclusive environment every time they walk into class.
Involve Students in the Process
For years I tried to do everything myself. Now my students help and they love it.
- “Board Buddies” – Each month I assign two students to help with tasks like taping, cutting, or posting student work. They get ownership, and I get time back.
- Student-Created Art – I invite students to illustrate key vocabulary, scenes from a book, or science diagrams to post. This creates authentic work for the board and reduces my printing load.
- Teach a Mini-Lesson Around the Display – When launching a new board, I involve students in setting it up. Sometimes we do a five-minute “design talk” where students help decide the layout. They love seeing their input on the walls.
Create Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Boards
Bulletin boards are powerful for representation but only if planned thoughtfully.
- Make a Rotation List of Cultural Events – I’ve expanded beyond traditional holidays to include Hispanic Heritage Month, Diwali, Black History Month, Lunar New Year, Women’s History, and local community celebrations.
- Use Bilingual Labels or Student Translations – Even a simple headline translated into another language can make students feel seen.
- Let Students Bring Ideas – Asking students which holidays or figures matter to them sparks ideas I might not have thought of and shows I value their voices.
One of my favorite moments was when my class saw our Diwali board last year. Several students lit up and started telling stories from home. That board opened the door to rich discussions we wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Five Tricks That Changed Everything for Me
Sometimes it’s the small hacks that add up. Here are my quick wins:
- Print Borders Once, Use All Year – Laminate and store rolled up or hung from a hanger.
- Use Sticky Putty or Masking Tape – This makes swapping pieces out easier without ripping the backing paper.
- Batch Cutting Sessions – Cut all letters for multiple boards at once while watching TV.
- Keep a “Board Go-Bag” – A small tote with scissors, tape, putty, border trim, and spare letters so you’re never hunting for supplies.
- Photograph Layouts – Before taking down a board, snap a photo. Next year you can replicate it in minutes.
Finding Ready-Made Solutions
Even with all these strategies, there are seasons when time runs short. Having a library of ready-made bulletin board kits changed my stress level dramatically. These kits typically include:
- Large art formatted for multi-page printing
- Coordinating borders
- Printable letters in multiple styles
- Student work pages or prompts that match the theme
For me, this is why I built Bulletin Board Club, to give teachers access to seasonal, cultural, and holiday boards plus differentiated student pages. The idea is simple: your next board is done before you even have to think about it. But whether you use my club or another resource, the point is the same — you don’t have to do it all yourself.
Reclaiming Time, Reclaiming Joy
Bulletin boards are a meaningful part of classroom culture — but they don’t have to drain your evenings or wallet. By planning ahead, reusing materials, involving students, and considering ready-made resources, you can build vibrant, culturally responsive displays without the burnout.
I’ve lived both sides of this. I’ve been the teacher at the kitchen table at midnight cutting letters, and I’ve been the teacher who walks out of school at 3:30 knowing my next board is ready. The difference is not just in my schedule — it’s in my energy, my patience, and my joy in teaching.
Whether you choose to DIY or lean on curated kits, the goal is the same: more time, less stress, and a classroom your students love walking into.
And that, for me, is the heart of teaching creating an environment where students feel inspired, safe to express themselves and learn.
